Profile of Christiaan Teeuwsen


  

Born in 1957 in St. Catharines, Ontario, Dr. Christiaan Teeuwsen received his Bachelor of Arts in 1980 from Dordt College, Sioux Center, Iowa; and both his Master of Fine Arts (1983) and Doctor of Musical Arts (1987) from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa. A student of Dr. Delores Bruch and Dr. Delbert Disselhorst, Chris was twice the recipient of the Rahn Organ Scholarship, as well as first prize scholarships from the Canada Council for Performers in Classical Music.

Chris is currently (since 1987) Associate Professor of Music (Organ and Choral department) at Redeemer University College in Ancaster, Ontario. His primary responsibilities as Associate Professor of Music include administrator of the Music Department, College Organist, Head of Organ Studies. Performance and Literature, Organ Curator, and Conductor of the College Concert Choir and Alumni Choir. Chris is also the Director of Music at MacNab St. Presbyterian Church in Hamilton, Ontario.

In 1985, Chris obtained his Solo Diploma in Organ from the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. While at the Sweelinck Conservatory, he was the assistant organist to Dutch organist and improviser Professor Klaas Bolt at the Grote of St. Bavo Kerk in Haarlem (1983-85). During his tenure at the Sweelinck Conservatory, Chris also studied organ with the leading authority on the performance of North German organ music, Harold Vogel (Orgelacademie in Bunde, Germany); and Ton Koopman (Utrecht). He also studied harpsichord with Ton Koopman and Kees Rosenhart (Haarlem, The Netherlands).

Chris is very involved in the music scene as a concert artist and lecturer, performing countless and leading concerts, workshops, lectures, and seminars throughout North America and Europe. Over two decades of Church Music experience, as well as numerous recordings confirm Chris as one of North America’s preeminent organists. In March of 2002, he made his début on the Naxos label with his CD featuring the works of the great German organist and composer Georg Böhm (1661-1733).
